Von der Kaschmirziege zum fertigen Schal – der Weg des Kaschmirs erklärt | EMAAL CASHMERE

From goat to scarf: the path of cashmere explained

Cashmere is one of the finest natural materials in the world - soft, warm and luxurious. But how is this special fabric actually made? The journey from the fluffy undercoat of the cashmere goat to the fine scarf is long, laborious and fascinating. In this article, we take you on the journey of cashmere: from its origin to the finished product.

Origin: where cashmere comes from

Genuine cashmere comes from the so-called cashmere goat (Capra hircus), which lives in the high altitudes of the Himalayas, Mongolia, China and northern India. In these regions, winters are extremely cold, which causes the goats to develop a particularly dense and fine undercoat. It is precisely this undercoat that is used to make cashmere.

Extraction: a careful process

In spring, when the goats naturally shed their winter coat, the fine undercoat is combed out by hand. Only around 150 to 200 grams of usable cashmere can be obtained per goat per year. This explains the rarity and price of the material. Important: High-quality cashmere is obtained in an animal-friendly way, without stress for the animals.

Cleaning and sorting: only the finest is used

After combing, the hair is cleaned and sorted. Coarse outer hairs are removed so that only the fine, soft fibers remain. This sorting is crucial for the subsequent quality of the end product. Only the finest fibers with a diameter of less than 19 micrometers are classified as genuine cashmere.

Spinning, dyeing, weaving

The sorted fibers are now spun into yarn. The thinner and more uniform the yarn, the softer and higher quality the end product. The yarn is then dyed - traditionally using gentle processes so as not to damage the fibers. It is then woven or knitted into the final fabric.

Finishing and refinement

In the final phase, the fabric is washed, brushed or lightly felted to make the surface even softer and more tactile. This is known as finishing. This also determines whether the cashmere is used for sweaters, scarves or other accessories.

The production of a genuine cashmere scarf is a craft that requires patience, knowledge and dedication. Every step - from the goat to the finished scarf - contributes to the quality and uniqueness of the product. When you wear cashmere, you are not only holding a luxury product in your hands, but also a piece of natural history.
